ST JOHN HENRY NEWMAN, VICTORIA is a community made up of former Anglicans, now part of the Catholic Church, together with lifelong Catholics, and those received into full communion either many years ago, or more recently, and who have happily found their home with us. Our parish was formed in December 2011 by members of the Anglican Catholic Church of Canada seeking unity with the Catholic Church under the terms of the Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum coetibus. The first members were received at St Andrew’s Cathedral, Victoria on Sunday 15 April 2012 by Bishop Richard Gagnon. In Advent 2012 the Canadian communities of the Ordinariate came together to form the Deanery of St John the Baptist. Our parish is served by a Parochial Administrator, Fr Kenyon, assisted by a Parochial Vicar, Mgr Peter Wilkinson, and the Ordinary Emeritus of the Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross, Mgr Carl Reid.

Fr Lee Kenyon, Parochial AdministratorFr Lee Kenyon, a priest of the Ordinariate of the Chair of St Peter, serves as the Parochial Administrator of St John Henry Newman. He was born in Manchester, England and was educated at the University of Lancaster (BA Philosophy) and the University of Leeds (BA Theology, MA Theology). Fr Kenyon trained for the Anglican ministry at the College of the Resurrection, Mirfield, Yorkshire, a theological college established by the Anglican monastic Community of the Resurrection. Fr Kenyon was ordained priest in the Church of England in 2005 by Bishop John Goddard (now Mgr John Goddard, a priest of the Archdiocese of Liverpool), and served his curacy in the Diocese of Blackburn at St Cuthbert, Darwen with St Stephen, Tockholes, Lancashire.

Fr Kenyon was appointed parish priest of St John the Evangelist, Calgary in 2009, which became one of the first parishes of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St Peter. Following reception into the Catholic Church, Fr Kenyon was ordained a Catholic priest in 2012, continuing to serve as parish priest of St John’s for a further five years. During this time Fr Kenyon also served as the first Dean of the Canadian Ordinariate Deanery of St John the Baptist, and Episcopal Vicar for Canada. From 2017-2019 he was on loan to the Diocese of Shrewsbury, England, serving in South Manchester, before returning to Canada to take up the position of Parochial Administrator of St John Henry’s in 2019.
Fr Kenyon is married to Elizabeth, from Boise, Idaho, a Classics graduate of Hillsdale College, Michigan. Together they have six children.

Mgr Carl Reid, Ordinary EmeritusMonsignor Carl Reid PA is the Ordinary Emeritus of the Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross (Australia and Oceania) and serves St John Henry Newman. He was born in Hagersville, Ontario, and was educated at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario (BASc Geological Engineering). He subsequently completed another thesis pursuant to a 15 year career in Civil Engineering in Victoria, British Columbia.
In 1986 he returned to Ottawa to study theology, briefly auditing a few courses at St Paul’s University, but primarily under the direct tutelage of Professors Emeritus from McGill University and Cornell University, eventually being granted a post-ordination MDiv and DD from St Bede’s Theological College. |
Along with Mgr Wilkinson, he was a participant in the Congress of Concerned Churchmen in St Louis, Missouri in 1977, and served in various lay-capacities in the Continuing Anglican parishes in Victoria and Vancouver prior to his move to Ottawa, where he served at the Cathedral of the Annunciation. Mgr Reid was ordained in 1990 by Bishop Robert Mercer CR (now Mgr Robert Mercer CR, a priest of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham). Bishop Mercer also married Mgr Reid and his wife Barb, whom he had met after his return to Ottawa. He became Dean of the Cathedral in 1998, and in 2007 was ordained Suffragan Bishop under the Bishop Ordinary, Peter Wilkinson who had succeeded Bishop Mercer.
After ordination as a Catholic priest in 2013, Mgr Reid and Barb moved back to Victoria in 2014 where he succeeded Mgr Wilkinson as the Parochial Administrator for St John Henry Newman. He was appointed Dean of the Canadian Ordinariate Deanery of St John the Baptist in 2017. In 2019 he was appointed by Pope Francis as the second Ordinary of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross, a position he occupied until his return to Canada in 2023.
